More About Ruby
Ruby is the birthstone for the month of July. For thousands of years, the ruby has been considered one of the most valuable gemstones on Earth. It has everything a precious stone should have: breathtaking color, in a range of red hues, excellent hardness and magnificent brilliance. In addition to that, it is an extremely rare gemstone, especially in its finer qualities.
The earliest rubies came from Sri Lanka but today the most valuable are mined in Myanmar. The most sought after are the rubies described as the color of pigeon's blood, a rich, deep, velvety red. Today about 70 percent of rubies come from Thailand.
The brilliant crimson color of ruby is associated with passion and love, making it an ideal choice for an engagement ring and as a Valentine's Day gift.
Rubies also have known for their mystical properties. They are believed to help restore vital life forces and increase energy and vigor. Ruby is also known as the stone of courage, and according to legend a person possessing a ruby can walk through life without fear of evil or misfortune.
Rubies are a hard and durable gem, and they are easy to care for, however it is not advisable to wear a ruby while doing rough work or using harsh chemicals. It is recommended Rubies be stored in a fabric-lined box, away from other pieces of jewelry, as they may scratch other, softer gemstones. They can be cleaned using gentle soapy water and a soft brush, and rinsed thoroughly.
