There are actually relatively few gemstones that occur in black. Onyx is the most common and least expensive of all black gemstones. Onyx is the Mystical birthstone for the month of December and is also the birth stone for the Zodiac sign of Leo. It is mined in Brazil, India, California and Uruguay. Onyx is a member of the chalcedony family, part of the quartz group.
During the 1950s it was very popular as a stone for men's signet rings. It is now used for intaglios and cameos, necklaces and small pieces of jewelry. Most Black Onyx that is available today is color enhanced (heated and dyed) to increase it's depth of color. Historically, Black Onyx has been considered a powerful protective stone, and was reported to have been carried when facing adversaries in battle and conflict. It is also considered a grounding stone, and said to banish negative energy. |
