| More About Opal |
 |
Opal is the birthstone for the month of October and the gemstone given to celebrate the 14th anniversary of marriage. The name opal comes from the Sanskrit upala, meaning "precious stone," and later evolved from the Greek "Opallus" which means to see a change in color.
All opals vary greatly in their ability to diffract light into flashes of rainbow color ranging from semi-transparent to opaque. Some have only red and orange lights, some have green, and some also have yellow and blue lights. Most opals are not faceted but cut into rounded or free-form cabochons that enhance their play of color. Today's supplies of opal come primarily from Australia, Mexico and the United States.
Opals are thought of as a symbol of hope, fidelity, and purity, and were called the Queen of Gems by the ancient Romans because they encompass the colors of all other gems. An ancient Australian aborigines legend tells of the creator who came down to Earth on a rainbow, in order to bring the message of peace to all the humans. And at the very spot, where his foot touched the ground, the stones became alive and started sparkling in all the colours of the rainbow. That was the birth of the Opals.
Opals are also the most delicate and soft gems commonly worn, rating a 5.5 to 6.5 on Moh's hardness scale. They require special care to insure their health and longevity. Make sure you remove your ring before physical activities like gardening and sports. Because Opals are porous and absorb liquids, do not immerse the gem in liquid chemical solutions, like dishwater. |
